Tractor-Trailer Driver Killed in Four-Truck Crash on NJ Turnpike in Carteret, NJ

Tractor-Trailer Driver Killed in Four-Truck Crash

Carteret, NJ (June 27, 2026) – A tractor-trailer driver was killed early Thursday morning after a fiery four-vehicle crash on the New Jersey Turnpike in Carteret. The crash occurred at approximately 4:07 a.m. on June 25, near milepost 96.2.

According to State Police, four Freightliner tractor-trailers were traveling northbound when two were stopped in the right lane, and a third was stopped in the center lane. A fourth tractor-trailer struck the rear of the stopped trucks, causing all three to become fully engulfed in flames. The impact also pushed the tractor-trailers in the right lane into a rear-end collision with each other.

The driver of the fourth tractor-trailer was killed in the crash. No other injuries were reported.

The investigation continues.

We extend our deepest condolences to the driver’s family and all those who loved him.

What Legal Options Does a Family Have After a Truck Driver Is Killed in a Multi-Truck Crash in New Jersey?

When a tractor-trailer driver is killed in a multi-vehicle truck crash, surviving family members may have legal options that extend beyond a standard workers’ compensation claim, particularly if questions exist about why the stopped vehicles were positioned where they were or whether proper warning measures, such as hazard lights or roadside flares, were in place.

Workers’ compensation generally provides death benefits to eligible family members of a commercial driver killed while working, covering a portion of lost income and funeral expenses. However, if another party’s negligence, such as that of the drivers operating the stopped tractor-trailers or the companies responsible for those vehicles, contributed to the conditions that led to the fatal collision, a separate civil wrongful death claim may also be available.

Multi-truck crashes involving stopped commercial vehicles raise important questions about why those trucks were stationary on an active highway lane, what precautions were taken to alert approaching traffic, and whether mechanical issues, scheduling problems, or other factors contributed to the trucks being stopped in that location.

Evidence such as electronic logging device data, dispatch records, and communications between drivers and their respective trucking companies can be critical in establishing the full sequence of events and determining whether any party other than the driver who died bears responsibility for the conditions that led to the crash.

Surviving family members may be able to recover significant financial losses in a New Jersey wrongful death claim involving a commercial driver, such as the driver’s future income and earning capacity, funeral and burial costs, and the long-term loss of companionship and support.

Navigating the interaction between workers’ compensation benefits and potential third-party claims, preserving evidence involving multiple commercial vehicles, and evaluating the full scope of the family’s losses are all areas where legal guidance may prove valuable.
