What You Should Do After a Crash in Elizabeth
Being involved in a crash can be stressful, but knowing the right steps helps keep you and others safe while protecting your legal rights.
First, check yourself and passengers for injuries. Call 911 immediately if anyone is hurt. Even minor injuries should be evaluated, as some symptoms may appear hours later.
If it is safe, move your vehicle out of traffic to prevent additional accidents. Turn on hazard lights to alert other drivers. Do not move anyone who is seriously injured unless there is an immediate danger, such as fire.
Report the crash to law enforcement. Police will document the scene, collect statements, and create an official report, which can be important for insurance claims and any potential legal matters.
Exchange information with other drivers, including names, phone numbers, and insurance details. Avoid admitting fault or making statements that could be misinterpreted.
Take photos of the scene, including vehicle damage, skid marks, and surrounding roads. These records can help support your insurance or legal case.
Contact your insurance company promptly. If injuries are involved, consider consulting a car accident lawyer to understand your rights and pursue compensation for medical costs, lost income, and pain and suffering.
