One Airlifted After Boats Collide Eight Miles Off Barnegat Inlet, NJ
August 1, 2026

Barnegat Inlet, NJ (August 1, 2026) – One person was airlifted to a hospital after a collision involving two boats approximately eight miles off Barnegat Inlet on Friday morning, July 31.

Reports indicated that the crash occurred around 11:45 a.m. and involved a 32-foot research vessel and a 33-foot Grady-White fishing boat. Initial information indicated the fishing boat was returning from offshore when its captain may have fallen asleep while the vessel was on autopilot, but that information has not been independently confirmed.

One person aboard the research vessel was transferred to a U.S. Coast Guard vessel before being airlifted by helicopter to a hospital. Authorities also reported that both boats began taking on water following the collision.

The incident remains under investigation.

We hope the injured person makes a full and timely recovery.

What Should You Do After a Boating Accident in Barnegat Inlet, NJ?

After a boating accident in New Jersey, the priority is ensuring everyone's safety and seeking emergency medical attention for anyone who may be injured.

Once immediate dangers have been addressed, reporting the accident to the appropriate authorities and cooperating with the investigation may help document what occurred.

If it is safe to do so, preserving evidence can also be important. Photographs of the vessels, visible damage, weather and water conditions, navigation equipment, and any injuries may help explain how the collision occurred. Contact information for passengers and witnesses, along with official reports prepared by responding agencies, may also become valuable during an insurance claim.

People injured in a boating accident should keep records of emergency treatment, hospital visits, prescriptions, rehabilitation, repair estimates, and any other expenses related to the incident. Documentation of lost income or other financial losses may also help demonstrate the accident's impact.

Because boating accidents often involve multiple agencies, insurance policies, and questions about vessel operation, the claims process may differ from a typical motor vehicle collision. A personal injury attorney familiar with New Jersey law can review the circumstances of a boating accident, explain how insurance and maritime liability issues may apply, and discuss possible legal options based on the available facts.

Our team at the Law Offices of Sander Budanitsky can help you understand what options may be available for you after a boating accident.
