Common Causes of Crashes in Cranford

Traffic collisions in Cranford often happen in areas with busy intersections, commuter traffic, and older roadway layouts. Some frequent contributing factors include:

  • High commuter volume: Cranford sits along major commuter routes like North Avenue, Centennial Avenue, and the Garden State Parkway, increasing morning traffic density. During peak hours, these roads see a steady flow of local drivers, commercial vehicles, and through-traffic from neighboring towns, all of which heighten the chance of sudden slowdowns and rear-end collisions.
  • Intersection congestion: Intersections such as North Ave & Elizabeth Ave often experience turning conflicts, limited visibility, and stop-and-go conditions. These areas also serve both residential and commercial zones, leading to frequent lane changes, rushed turns, and unexpected stops.
  • Sun glare during morning hours: East–west roads like North Avenue are especially prone to visibility issues during sunrise. Even brief moments of reduced visibility can make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians, cyclists, or stopped vehicles ahead.
  • Driver distraction: Many drivers passing through Cranford are on their way to work, leading to distracted driving from phone use, GPS adjustments, or multitasking. Morning routines, such as grabbing coffee, handling calls, or checking messages, often contribute to decreased attention.
  • Speeding on secondary roads: Some drivers pick up speed on straight or less-congested stretches, which raises the risk of losing control or hitting fixed objects, such as trees. These roadways may seem safer due to lighter traffic, but unexpected obstacles or turning vehicles can appear quickly.
  • Weather-related hazards: Frost, rain, or slick pavement commonly affect morning travel, especially in fall and winter months. Even a thin layer of moisture can reduce traction, causing longer stopping distances or skids.
  • Residential driveways and cross streets: Cranford’s residential character means frequent turns, parked cars, and pedestrian activity, which can contribute to collisions. Children walking to school, residents backing out of driveways, and dog-walkers crossing the street all increase the need for heightened driver awareness.
