Police Officer Injured in Suspected DUI Collision on Rt 47 in Middle Twp., NJ
October 17, 2026

Middle Township, NJ (October 17, 2026) – A police officer was seriously injured on Friday night, October 16, after being struck by a vehicle while conducting a traffic stop on Route 47 South, also known as Wildwood Boulevard, in Middle Township.

Emergency responders assisted at the scene before transporting the officer to AtlantiCare Medical Center. The officer was reported to be in critical but stable condition.

The driver involved in the crash remained at the scene and was taken into custody on suspicion of impaired driving. The driver faces charges including driving while intoxicated, assault by auto, and a violation of public health and safety law involving serious bodily injury, along with additional traffic offenses.

The Middle Township Police Department and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office continue to investigate the crash.

We hope the injured officer recovers fully and quickly.

Can an Injured Police Officer Receive Compensation After Being Struck by a Vehicle in New Jersey?

Yes, a police officer injured after being struck by a vehicle while performing official duties may qualify for workers’ compensation benefits in New Jersey. Depending on the circumstances, additional legal options may be available if another driver’s negligence contributed to the crash.

These benefits generally cover eligible public employees’ necessary medical treatment and a portion of lost wages during qualifying periods of disability. The benefits available depend on the severity of the injury, the officer’s work status, and applicable legal requirements.

Determining whether additional legal options exist requires examining how the collision occurred. If a driver was suspected of impairment, investigators may consider whether intoxication, speeding, or distracted driving contributed to the crash. However, an arrest or criminal charge alone does not establish civil liability.

If evidence indicates that another party was responsible, the injured officer may have grounds for a third-party claim beyond workers’ compensation. The availability of such a claim depends on the facts, applicable law, and any restrictions affecting public employees.

To evaluate these options, evidence such as police reports, witness statements, dashcam or surveillance footage, and medical records can help establish how the collision occurred and document the injuries. Preserving these records may support both benefit claims and potential legal action.

Because serious on-duty injuries can involve multiple claims and legal deadlines, consulting an attorney may help clarify the available options. The Law Offices of Sander Budanitsky can explain potential next steps based on your circumstances.
