Several Hurt in Multi-Vehicle Wreck on Rte 78
July 29, 2026

Springfield, NJ (July 29, 2026) – Several people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Route 78 west near milepost 50 in Springfield Township on Wednesday morning, July 29. The pileup was reported at about 5:48 a.m.

Initial reports indicate that several vehicles came to rest across the westbound lanes, blocking part of the highway. At least one vehicle was overturned during the crash.

Emergency units arrived shortly after the crash was reported. Several people were evaluated for apparent non-life-threatening injuries, including back pain.

The exact number of vehicles involved, the total number of people injured, and their names and ages have not yet been confirmed.

Authorities are working to determine what caused the vehicles to collide.

Our thoughts are with everyone recovering from this crash.

How Is Fault Determined After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Springfield, NJ?

After a multi-vehicle crash in Springfield, fault depends on evidence showing how the chain of collisions began. Investigators review vehicle damage, roadway markings, final positions, footage, and driver statements. They use those details to assign each driver a share of blame.

Because several drivers may contribute, New Jersey’s comparative negligence rule can affect your claim. You may recover damages when your share of fault is 50 percent or less. Any percentage assigned to you reduces the amount you may receive.

Across this part of Union County, Route 78 carries heavy morning traffic toward Route 22, Route 24, and the Garden State Parkway. Sudden slowdowns near Springfield Avenue and Morris Avenue can leave drivers little time to react.

After crews clear the roadway, important evidence can disappear quickly. Vehicles may be towed, debris may be removed, and memories may fade. Your photographs, dashcam recordings, surveillance footage, and witness information can help preserve the sequence.

If several insurers become involved, each carrier may try to shift blame to another driver. Conflicting accounts can make it harder to determine who caused the first collision. Keep your statements careful, accurate, and consistent from the beginning.

When important evidence is difficult to obtain, a lawyer can help preserve available footage, request records, speak with witnesses, and review vehicle damage. An attorney can also examine how the vehicles collided and trace the sequence of the pileup. This work may help clarify how the fault should be divided.
