Drunk Driver Hits Two Cruisers, Injures Officer on Rt 21 in Clifton, NJ
August 16, 2026

Clifton, NJ (August 16, 2026) – A Clifton police officer and a passenger were injured overnight on Sunday, August 16, after an alleged drunk, unlicensed driver slammed into two stationary police cruisers along Route 21. Clifton Police Department officers and emergency crews responded to the northbound lanes near River Road shortly before 4:00 a.m.

According to police officials, an officer was inside one of the police cruisers when a 2024 Acura MDX struck the emergency vehicles. The impact caused one cruiser and the Acura to burst into flames, forcing a second officer to dive over a concrete barrier to avoid being hit.

Emergency medical personnel transported the injured police officer to a local hospital for treatment of a head injury before he was subsequently released. A passenger in the suspect vehicle was also treated at a local hospital for a shoulder injury.

Law enforcement officers arrested the driver after he was treated for minor injuries. Authorities charged him with assault by auto and issued summonses for driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, careless driving, and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.

Clifton police are continuing their investigation into the crash.

We hope everyone affected by this wreck makes a full recovery.

What Legal Protections Apply to Victims Injured by Impaired Drivers in Clifton, NJ?

Victims injured by impaired drivers in Clifton, NJ, are protected under state civil law, allowing them to seek full financial compensation through personal injury lawsuits for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering, while also receiving immediate no-fault medical coverage through New Jersey's Personal Injury Protection (PIP) system.
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs constitutes clear negligence under New Jersey law.
Because impaired driving severely degrades reaction times and spatial awareness, these collisions often cause severe physical trauma, including traumatic brain injuries, complex fractures, and permanent spinal damage.
While New Jersey's PIP system pays for initial emergency treatment regardless of who caused the crash, victims who suffer significant injuries are not restricted to these basic benefits and can pursue third-party claims against the at-fault driver.
Building a strong civil case against an impaired motorist requires gathering critical evidence alongside ongoing criminal proceedings. Experienced personal injury attorneys support victims by securing police reports, obtaining blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) test results, identifying all applicable insurance policies, and handling communications with insurance adjusters to demand full accountability.
Our team at the Law Offices of Sander Budanitsky has helped people across New Jersey navigate complex insurance claims following severe accidents.
