Fatal House Fire on Center St Claims Woman’s Life

Hillside, NJ (January 2, 2026) – A deadly house fire in Hillside claimed the life of a seventy-year-old woman and left her adult son hospitalized on Friday, January 2, according to local authorities.

The fire broke out around 5:30 a.m. at a single-family home located at the 1531 block of Center Street. Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames engulfing the residence. The intensity of the fire caused significant damage to the home and even melted the siding on a neighboring house.

Crews worked quickly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further. Despite their efforts, the top floor of the home suffered extensive damage. Firefighters later discovered a woman deceased inside a second-floor bedroom.

Neighbors identified the victim as Marie Wright. The woman’s fifty-year-old son also lived in the home at the time of the incident. He suffered smoke inhalation, and emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials confirmed that he remains in stable condition.

Fire officials confirmed that no firefighters sustained injuries during the operation. Fire marshals and the Union County Prosecutor’s Office are now working together to determine the cause of the fire. The investigation remains ongoing.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.

House Fires in Union County

House fires remain a serious safety concern across Union County, especially during colder months when heating systems run continuously. Fires that start in residential homes can spread rapidly, leaving occupants little time to escape. In tragic cases like this one, fires result in fatal injuries and devastating loss for families.

Victims of residential fires may suffer severe burns, smoke inhalation, and oxygen deprivation. Smoke inhalation alone can cause life-threatening damage to the lungs and brain within minutes. Older adults and individuals with limited mobility face even greater risk during emergencies.

When a fire leads to loss of life, families often face overwhelming emotional and financial challenges. These situations may raise questions about safety conditions, fire prevention measures, and whether the tragedy could have been prevented.

Claims related to house fires may involve issues such as faulty wiring, unsafe heating equipment, lack of smoke detectors, or other dangerous conditions. Determining responsibility requires a careful review of fire investigation reports, property conditions, and maintenance records.

Surviving victims may also experience lasting trauma. Smoke inhalation injuries can require long-term medical care and monitoring. Emotional distress, grief, and disruption to daily life often affect entire families after a fatal fire.

Legal guidance can help families understand whether accountability applies and what steps may follow after a tragic loss.
