Man Killed by EB NJ Transit Train on Morris & Essex Line

Summit, NJ (December 2, 2025) – A man was killed on Tuesday morning, December 2, around 8:13 a.m., after being struck by an eastbound NJ Transit train on the Morris & Essex Line.

NJ Transit reported that the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene and has not yet been publicly identified. The train involved, Train 6620, which departed Dover at 7:33 a.m., was carrying approximately 500 passengers and was scheduled to reach New York Penn Station at 8:55 a.m. Following the incident, service on the Morris & Essex Line was suspended in both directions, while the Gladstone Branch experienced a brief shutdown before resuming operations.

NJ Transit Police and Summit Police remained on scene throughout the morning, and urged residents and commuters to avoid the area while the investigation continued and crews worked to restore operations.

We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this challenging time.

Compensation After Fatal Train Incidents in New Jersey

When a fatal railway incident occurs, families are left not only with emotional devastation but also with sudden financial burdens. New Jersey law allows surviving family members to pursue various forms of compensation to help ease the impact of their loss. Understanding these options is an important step in navigating the aftermath of a tragic event.

  • Wrongful death compensation: Families may be eligible to seek compensation for financial losses resulting from the victim’s death, including lost future income, benefits, and household contributions. Wrongful death claims also help address funeral and burial costs.
  • Survivor claims: In cases where the victim experienced pain and suffering before passing, families may pursue a separate survivor action to recover damages related to the victim’s conscious suffering, medical expenses, or emergency treatment.
  • Loss of companionship and support: Compensation may be available for the emotional and relational impact caused by the loss of a loved one. This includes loss of companionship, guidance, and consortium.
  • Economic and household losses: When a victim provided childcare, home maintenance, or other essential household contributions, families may recover compensation for the value of these services.
  • Emotional distress for witnesses or close family members: In limited circumstances, those who directly witnessed the fatal event or its aftermath may pursue compensation for emotional trauma, depending on the facts of the case.

Because train-related incidents involve multiple agencies, including NJ Transit Police, local law enforcement, and sometimes federal investigators, navigating the aftermath can be overwhelming for families. A trustworthy attorney can help families pursue rightful compensation, manage communication with transit authorities, and ensure all legal rights are protected.
