After a crash in New Jersey, drivers should exchange identifying and insurance information when it is safe to do so. This generally includes each driver's name, address, driver's license information, vehicle registration details, insurance company, and policy information. Drivers should also provide the names and addresses of passengers or other people involved when appropriate.
Vehicle information can be particularly useful later if questions arise about who was involved. Drivers should note the make, model, color, and license plate number of the other vehicle and, when possible, take photographs of the vehicles, their positions, visible damage, and the surrounding roadway. Witness names and contact information can also be valuable because an independent account may help clarify how the crash occurred.
New Jersey law requires drivers involved in crashes involving injury, death, or property damage above the statutory threshold to stop and exchange information, and drivers must provide reasonable assistance to people who are injured.
A personal injury lawyer can use the information collected at the scene, along with medical records and other documentation, to help evaluate a potential claim.
